The Absurdity of Curing Gays

August 4th, 2010 Comments off

The late Rembert Truluck, former Doctor of Theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, said, “No Bible basis exists for the so called “Ex-Gay” movement that has sprung up in the past 15 years in many denominations and independent religious groups. No scientific basis exists for the ‘reparative therapy’ to ‘cure’ homosexuals or ‘deliver’ people from their homosexuality. Claims of such cures and deliverance do not hold up under close examination.” Truluck also said, “The Ex-Gay Movement is a fraud without any credible scientific research to support claims to change homosexuals to heterosexuals.”

Don’t Believe the Hype

There is no medical or scientific evidence that will support the assertion that homosexuality can be “cured” or changed. The idea that homosexuality is a disease to be cured is a reflection of bigotry and ignorance. This idea of homosexuality as a disease or disorder is all but rejected in medical and scientific communities. Neither is homosexuality a moral depravity that needs to be judged or converted.

Almost 15 years ago, The American Psychiatric Association Board made a unanimous decision to reject therapy aimed solely at turning gays into heterosexuals, saying, “It can cause depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior.” Dr. Nada Stotland, Vice President of the American Psychiatric Association, said “All the evidence would indicate this is the way people are born. We treat disease, not the way people are.

“The very existence of therapy that is supposed to change people’s sexuality, even for people who don’t take it, is harmful because it implies that they have a disease. There is evidence that the belief itself can trigger depression and anxiety. It’s about time that the medical doctors who are specialists in mental and emotional health and illness spoke out in the midst the present storm of false propaganda in advertisements and books by the fast growing ‘ex-gay’ industry.”

What Science Says

After more than 40 years of research on gender identity and sexual orientation, John Money, director of the Psychohormonal Research Unit of the John Hopkins School of Medicine, has observed, “It is no more possible to change a homosexual orientation into a heterosexual one than it is to change a heterosexual orientation into a homosexual one.”

Conversion Therapies

Some therapists who undertake so-called conversion therapy report that they have been able to change their clients’ sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual. Close scrutiny of these reports, however. show several factors that cast doubt on their claims. For example, many of these claims come from organizations with an ideological perspective that condemns homosexuality. Furthermore, their claims are poorly documented; for example, treatment outcome is not followed and reported over time, as would be the standard to test the validity of any mental health intervention.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that it isn’t possible to change someone’s sexual orientation, but it is possible to make him or her miserable over it. Religionist focus on young people just coming out of the “closet,” who are already stressed out by family pressure and society’s intolerance. What they miss in their zeal to “cure” homosexuality is that they are the sources of the very unhappiness they claim to be treating. Anyone can suppress their feelings and live a lie, for a time, but it doesn’t work in the end. Besides, living a lies doesn’t seem like much of a Christian ethic. On the other hand, blatant hatred tends to say more about the hater than the hated. There are important things going on in this world that could use the attention. Homosexuailty is not one of them.
