Why do so many countries despise the United States? The answer is complex and has many facets; not least among them is war. Since 1904, the United States has been continually involved in military conflicts that if totaled by length of engagement tallies well over 250 years. Looking at the instances of US commitment gives an idea of the extensive nature of the war efforts of this country.

Quite literally, the United States has been at war the entire 20th century and the first ten years of the 21st century, making the idea of a “war economy” very real. A look over the chart below will show only six years the country has not had some type of military action and then only three years of consecutive “non-military” involvement.

      Years 326

The years of war have impacted the US mindset as well as economy. The idea of conquest and the use of force to acheive goals effects the politics, policies and behavior of Americans and how they are viewed throughout the world. Beginning the 21st century the United States in on target to exceed all of the previous 100 years if military engagements continue at the present rate. With the exception of humanitarian use of troops, other engagements have been costly in human lives as well as cost to the government. The only beneficiaries of war tend to be the businesses that supply the combatants.
